Unlocking Emotional Healing
The Power of Emotion Code in Restoring Inner Balance
Unlocking Emotional Healing: How Emotion Code Can Help Release What We Have Been Carrying
There are emotions we experience in the moment, process, and move through. Then there are the ones that seem to stay with us. They settle into the background of our lives and quietly influence the way we respond to people, the situations that trigger us, the relationships we choose, the things we fear, and sometimes even the way we feel inside our own bodies.
I think most of us know what this feels like, even if we have never had language for it.
You can understand exactly why something happened. You can have forgiven the person involved. You can have talked about it, journaled about it, prayed about it, meditated on it, and genuinely believed you were finished with it. Then something happens years later and suddenly your body responds as though you are right back there again.
That has always fascinated me.
Our bodies are constantly receiving information. They respond to stress, safety, memory, relationships, environment, touch, sound, breath, movement, and emotion. We have spent thousands of years developing healing traditions around the understanding that human beings are interconnected systems. The language changes from one tradition to another, but this relationship between mind, body, emotion, spirit, and energy is hardly a new idea.
Emotion Code gives us one beautifully simple way to explore it.
What Is Emotion Code?
Emotion Code is an energy healing technique developed by Dr. Bradley Nelson that focuses on identifying and releasing what he calls trapped emotions. These are emotional energies connected with experiences that the body may continue carrying after the original moment has passed.
The specific Emotion Code system is modern, although many of the ideas it works alongside are ancient. Traditional healing systems around the world have worked with energy, meridians, emotional balance, breath, touch, movement, intention, and the relationship between emotional and physical well-being for generations upon generations.
Modern research continues to explore these relationships too. We understand far more today about stress, trauma, the nervous system, neuroplasticity, psychoneuroimmunology, and the ways emotional experiences can influence physical processes than we did even a few decades ago. There is still an enormous amount we do not fully understand.
I am perfectly comfortable with that.
Human beings were using many effective practices long before we had laboratory language explaining why they worked. A mechanism being incomplete or still under investigation does not erase what people experience, what practitioners observe, or what researchers continue trying to understand.
That curiosity is one of the reasons I love this work so much.
What Does It Mean to Have a Trapped Emotion?
Within Emotion Code, a trapped emotion is an emotional energy that has remained connected to the body after an experience.
You may have experienced grief during a loss, fear during a frightening situation, anger during a betrayal, shame during childhood, or abandonment during a relationship. Most emotions naturally move through us. Sometimes, according to the Emotion Code framework, part of that emotional experience stays energetically connected to us.
Over time, these emotions may become part of the patterns through which we experience our lives.
This does not always look dramatic.
Sometimes it looks like becoming defensive every time someone gives you feedback. Sometimes it is repeatedly feeling unsafe in relationships even when the person in front of you has done nothing to make you unsafe. Sometimes you feel inexplicably emotional around a particular subject. Sometimes there is a place in your body where you consistently notice tension whenever you are stressed or upset.
I love paying attention to these moments because our bodies are so extraordinarily intelligent.
They communicate constantly.
Most of us were simply never taught how to listen.
How Emotion Code Works
During an Emotion Code session, we use muscle testing to communicate with the subconscious and identify the emotional energy we are looking for. We gradually narrow the information down until we identify the emotion and anything else that needs to be understood around it.
Sometimes there is a very clear story attached to what comes up. Sometimes the person immediately knows exactly where it came from. Other times there is no dramatic revelation at all.
Both are completely fine.
One of the things I have learned through energy medicine is that we do not always need to intellectually dissect every experience in order to begin changing our relationship with it.
Once we identify the trapped emotion, the Emotion Code process uses a magnet along the Governing Vessel meridian with the intention of releasing that energetic pattern.
The meridian system itself comes from a much older understanding of the body's energetic pathways and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and related practices for centuries. Emotion Code applies its own modern methodology to that larger energetic framework.
For me, there is something incredibly beautiful about bringing these worlds together. Ancient systems of understanding the body continue to sit beside modern research into the nervous system, stress physiology, trauma, emotional regulation, and mind-body health. We continue learning new language for things human beings have been noticing about themselves for a very long time.
What Emotional Healing Can Feel Like
Emotional healing does not always arrive with fireworks.
Sometimes it is incredibly quiet.
You suddenly realize that the thing that used to make you furious barely bothers you anymore. You have a conversation that once would have sent you spiraling and notice that you stayed grounded. You think about a person and realize the familiar knot in your stomach is gone. You make a boundary without spending three days feeling guilty about it.
You may simply feel lighter.
Clients experience Emotion Code differently, just as people experience Reiki, Medical Qigong, breathwork, meditation, somatic practices, and other forms of complementary health care differently. Some notice an immediate shift. Some recognize changes several days later. Some uncover another layer of something they are ready to work through.
Healing has never felt linear to me. It feels much more like becoming reacquainted with yourself.
You clear something and suddenly there is more room.
More room to breathe. More room to choose differently. More room to recognize what belongs to you and what you have been carrying because somewhere along the way you learned that you had to.
That space matters.
The Connection Between Emotional and Physical Wellness
One of the things I feel most passionately about is our tendency to separate ourselves into pieces.
We talk about mental health over here, physical health over there, spirituality somewhere else, and emotional health in another room entirely.
You are one person.
Your body experiences your life with you.
We already know that chronic stress can affect sleep, digestion, muscle tension, immune function, cardiovascular health, pain perception, hormones, mood, and countless other processes throughout the body. Researchers continue studying the connections between emotional experiences, trauma, the nervous system, inflammation, immune response, and physical health.
Energy medicine approaches these relationships through another lens. Practices such as Medical Qigong, Reiki, acupuncture, acupressure, breathwork, meditation, Emotion Code, Body Code, and other complementary wellness traditions work with the understanding that restoring balance in one part of the human system can influence the whole.
There is still much that modern medicine cannot fully explain about these practices. Research continues to investigate them, and clinical evidence varies by modality, condition, study design, and outcome being measured. I think there is tremendous value in allowing that exploration to continue without pretending that the absence of a complete explanation means generations of human experience should simply be dismissed.
For me, that would be the least scientific response of all.
Curiosity matters.
Observation matters.
Experience matters.
Research matters.
And there is room for all of them.
Emotional Healing and Our Relationships
The emotions we carry do not exist in isolation. They come with us into marriages, friendships, parenting, work, family relationships, and the way we relate to ourselves.
A fear of abandonment can change how we respond to distance. An old experience of rejection can make neutral feedback feel enormous. Shame can make receiving love uncomfortable. Grief can quietly shape the way we protect ourselves from becoming attached again.
When we begin clearing and understanding those emotional patterns, we often begin seeing our relationships differently too.
This is one reason my work at Healing Thyme naturally moves between energy medicine, complementary health, emotional wellness, personal growth, spiritual wellness, somatic awareness, and pieces that can feel very similar to life coaching.
I am interested in the whole person.
I want to know what happened, what your body remembers, what patterns you have built around it, what you believe about yourself because of it, and whether those beliefs still belong in the life you are trying to create.
There is extraordinary freedom in realizing that a pattern can have made perfect sense once and still be ready to leave.
Healing Is Also Remembering Who You Are
Somewhere along the way, I think healing became synonymous with endlessly finding things wrong with ourselves.
That has never been what I want this work to become.
Healing should eventually return you to your life.
The deeper I go into energy medicine and mind-body-spirit work, the more I believe that so much of healing is remembering. Remembering what your body feels like when it is safe. Remembering how to trust yourself. Remembering how to recognize your own intuition. Remembering that an experience you survived does not need to become the permanent architecture of your life.
That is the part of this work that I find so incredibly beautiful.
We are not trying to erase your history.
Your experiences shaped you. Some made you softer. Some made you stronger. Some taught you discernment. Some broke something open that eventually became wisdom.
We are simply asking whether every piece of what you picked up along the way still needs to come with you.
Sometimes the answer is no.
And there is something sacred about realizing you are finally ready to put it down.
Creating Space for Something New
I have watched people spend years trying to think their way out of something their body still seems to be holding.
That is one of the reasons I believe so deeply in having more than one tool.
Therapy can be extraordinary. Coaching can be extraordinary. Medical care can be extraordinary. Energy medicine can be extraordinary. Breathwork, meditation, movement, acupuncture, Reiki, Medical Qigong, Emotion Code, somatic practices, spiritual work, and complementary health approaches can each offer us a different doorway.
We are complicated, magnificent human beings. I think we deserve more than one doorway.
Emotion Code gives us another place to begin.
It allows us to become curious about the emotions we carry, the patterns underneath our reactions, and the possibility that something we have lived with for years does not necessarily have to remain part of us forever.
That is what emotional healing means to me.
There comes a moment when healing stops being about searching your past for one more thing to fix and becomes about realizing how much space you have created for your future.
You get to live there.
You get to build something there.
And eventually, you get to stop healing for a minute and go live the beautiful life you did all of this work to be present for.
